What to expect from office-based minimally invasive treatments
On the day of your procedure with an office-based minimally invasive treatment (MIT),
you will go to a doctor’s office that is equipped with a treatment center.
Because doctors’ offices and MITs are not all the same, treatment procedures
may vary. The following is a general recap of the steps for treatment using the
Prolieve Thermodilatation® System,
just one of the office-based MITs currently available.
- At least one hour before treatment, your doctor may give you medication to help
you relax during the procedure. You may also receive other medications to help avoid
infections.
- You will be asked to empty your bladder.
- You will be asked to lie on your back on the treatment bed. Your doctor will then
apply anesthesia to the tip of your penis. This will help you to not feel pain while
the catheter (a tube) is inserted into
your penis’s opening (the urethra).
- To keep you warm and comfortable, you will remain covered throughout the procedure.
- During the treatment, you may be offered a book, or earphones to listen to music.
- Before your doctor inserts the catheter into the urethra, lubrication will be applied
with a syringe (without a needle) directly into the urethra.
- Your doctor will then insert the catheter through the urethra into the bladder.
- Next, your doctor will prepare the rectal
temperature monitor for insertion; the monitor is used to gauge that the
microwave heat directed at your excess prostate
tissue does not get too hot.
- Treatment will then be initiated and will last approximately 45 minutes. Your doctor
will monitor you at all times.
